yes, they should be giving you a receipt. you should also be using a bank check as well, not a personal one.

Your cheque is not necessarily your receipt. Many bank accounts do not include returning your cancelled cheque to you.
Any time you cut a cheque the size of a home down-payment, you should demand a receipt. Any reputable real estate agent will provide you with one.
Now that you’re buying a home make sure your Home Depot credit is good. You’ll be needing it.

your check is your receipt PLUS!!! the contract that you wrote has the amount of the deposit . . . so you are protected twice.
