Lawyers are paid a retaining fee upon hiring, whatever they set. If the amount of time needed exceeds what their retainer covered they are paid when they are finished, which should be closing.

Generally, payment to your Real Estate lawyer is due upon closing (when buying or selling real property), when using the attorney for other transactions it is usually due when the job is done unless other arrangements have been made with the attorney.

Generally both sides have their own lawyer. An attourney is supposed to represent your intersts so why would you want an attourney working both sides, he cant fully represent both of you, he'll be looking out for one party mroe than the other
